Electrical hazards can have a devastating effect on your business and individuals, should an electrical incident occur.
These hazards can impact your staff, contractors and patrons.
Most common electrical hazards seen in our Industry include:
- Faulty or poorly maintained electrical equipment
- Overloaded power boards
- Using electrical equipment in close proximity to water
Equipment that is most vulnerable are tools that are used regularly, in particular those plugged and unplugged daily. Regular offenders include extension leads, small kitchen appliances and fridges.
WHS requirements to notify in the event you have an electrical related incident (electric shock, electrical fire, electrocution) the PCBU is required to notify SafeWork NSW as soon as reasonably practicable (more information can be found here).
What can you do? (Proactive controls)
- Testing and tagging
- Use of Residual Current Devices (RCDs) or “safety switches”
Other electrical safety controls include:
- Regular maintenance
- Visual inspections prior to use
- Lock out or remove faulty items
- Ensure your workers are trained in the correct operation of the electrical equipment
