A key focus of our business is to make Lion a force for good for people and our planet; thinking beyond the short-term and prioritising the needs of future generations. In December 2022, Lion signed a landmark 100% renewable power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Lightsource BP solar farm in Woolooga, near Gympie QLD. Combined with our 100% renewable PPA in NSW, Lion is now the first large scale brewer in Australia to procure 100% renewable electricity for all Australian operations. This achieves our strategic carbon reduction target two years ahead of schedule.
The PPA will avoid a massive 138,000 tonnes of carbon emissions and means Lion has now halved its carbon emissions since 2019 and is just 5% away from its 2030 Science Based Target. In 2020, Lion was the first large scale brewer in Australia to be certified carbon neutral; adding 100% renewable electricity procurement to this achievement means Lion is once again role modelling genuine climate leadership across the brewing industry and beyond.
Lion is a founding member of the Australian Climate Leaders Coalition (CLC) and was proud to take a prominent role in the 2022 Australian Climate Leaders Coalition Scope 3 Roadmap and lead a proof of concept on a carbon neutral XXXX Gold. This project was a world first presented at COP27 and is a clear example of Lion’s willingness to work with customers to demonstrate the impact of carbon reduction milestones, such as 100% renewable electricity procurement, along the full beer value chain.
